The Mill X SCAD: Week 1 Review

Hello! I am Thalia Valencia-Murphy. I was given the opportunity to be in a collaboration project between The Mill and SCAD. Being able to work off feedback from our mentor who are professionals within the industry, is very valuable and helps all of us grow as artists. I will be working with a team of 4 to create a beautiful project.

Here is Team Lighting:

Thalia Valencia-Murphy: FX Artist

Phirada Kanjanangkulpunt: FX Artist

Thomas Green: Lighting / LookDev. Artist

Drew Daly: Compositor

Here is our current pitch to our mentors:

First we began with brainstorming for our ideas that we wanted to pitch to the mentors. These were some of the commercials that were brought up for discussion to start with:

This commercial gives us a great fun story with an ending of a car commercial and it was unexpected. Although it is not practical for this project.

This project played with mixed scale and we ended up using it for one of our main references:

This commercial sparked the idea of having a mixed scale environment. This size contrast makes it very interesting.

We decided to explore this idea of mixed scale further. First we thought about a toy car getting struck by lightning and then breaking out of the display case that it was in into a photo of a home. After talking out the idea, we decided to keep the lightning and have the environment be set in the display case only. This will give us more time for polish instead of having to do more set dressing and environment building.

After deciding on a more cohesive ending, Thomas put together a quick digital previs.

Thomas and I took some time to film a live previs to really improve our camera work and timing of our commercial. After multiple takes and editing, we were comfortable enough with our cinematography. Some shots had to be changed around and we decided an establishing shot would be best for this project instead of a very large shot 1. Of course this will be modified, but it was a good start.

Week 2 consists of pitching our ideas to the mentors. We will get feedback on whether our ideas need to be flushed out even more or if we can begin R&D for our project.
