PHVFX X SCAD: Week 2

After getting feedback from our mentors, Ed Mendez, Robert "Nick" Dauphinais, and Monica Manalo-Hosenball, on our pitch, we made sure that we address any concerns or questions they had as we moved on to our next step of the pipeline. First, Xander revised the previs to match the storyboards more accurately and Emma worked on a pipeline flowchart to have a better visual of scheduling and work contribution.

This perfectly lays out what lies ahead as we continue from our creative research stage rolling into filming and R&D.

Shooting

Day 1

Before shooting, the actor had been briefed on what our idea was and the direction we wanted to take for our shots. Hannah had talked to her about potential wardrobes that would best suit what we needed.

We used a Blackmagic Design Ursa Mini Pro to shoot our plates. Both Emma and I had some previous experiencing with shooting with the camera so we were able to get it set up on the first day. We all arrived and got the equipment on location around 4:30 pm for our evening shot.

After setting up our equipment, we took a couple test shots to make sure the camera settings were correct and everything was in place for shooting. As per the comment made by one of the mentors, we made sure there was a Q-tip in place of where the CG flower will be composited in to make it easier to track. The stem will cover up the Q-tip in post.

Xander and Hannah both took turns shooting with the camera and took multiple takes of the same shot to give us some more options when we select the final take we will go with. The first day a lot of time was spent rolling out any story continuity errors.

Day 2

As a team, we were able to more efficiently shoot as we had a clear understanding of how to set up and take down the equipment and a direct understanding of each shot that we needed. We arrived around 1 on site. The biggest difference was the lighting that was available to us.

After reviewing the film, there were some things to take note of as we continue down the pipeline. We really enjoyed the lighting options that shooting two days provided us. We preferred day 2 lighting as it was more radiant and warm, giving us the look we were going for compared to the overcast day. However, the afternoon lighting also casted many shadows on the actress and the potential need to comp that in later raised a bit of concern, but still doable. The second concern was the exposure from the light hitting on the ground. Our team is consulting an outside source, Camilo Gutierrez, for color grading options.
